WASTE OIL DISPOSAL
CHANGE IT INTO SOMETHING USEFUL
BRING IT TO US
Do-it yourself motor oil changers in Massachusetts generate up to 6 million gallons of used oil every year. But now the Town of Wakefield, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority want to take the guessing out of what to do with used motor oil. The answer is simple: recycle it.
WHY RECYCLING MAKES SENSE
· Preventing pollution: Used motor oil that is poured down a sewer drain, thrown in the trash, or
poured on the ground is a threat to the environment.
Fact: Just one gallon of used motor oil can create an eight acre slick on water surface.
· Protecting public health: Used motor oil that winds up in the trash, a sewer or an incinerator can
endanger the water you drink and the air you breathe.
· Conserving a limited natural resource: used motor oil can still be USEFUL. With your help that oil
can go one more time around the track.
Fact : That same gallon of oil, when reprocessed, can generate enough energy to meet the
Electricity needs of your home for half a day.
THE ROAD TO REUSE
Used oil can be recycled by
· Bringing it to the Reading Used Oil Collection Center.
· Returning it with a receipt to the place where it was purchased. (State law required that a Retailer
accepts your oil upon presentation of sales receipt from the store. You cannot be charged for this
service.)
Oil received at the collection center you visit will be processed or used to heat Town Buildings.
TURNING IT IN
It is easy to recycle oil and there is no charge. Just drain the oil into a clean, reusable container with a tight fitting cap, such as a plastic milk jug and bring it to the collection center or retailer. Avoid mixing your used oil with any other liquids. Any mixture may be unusable.
